Having outside help may be the best medicine to quickly and effectively manage a firm. Here are some tips to consider before investing the money on an outside consultant.

When anything needs to be taught or fixed, the first thing a company should do is evaluate whether the company has the internal resources or expertise to accomplish the task. If the firm does not have the resources, consider bringing in an outside consultant. When planning a change in procedures, one needs to make sure that this change is convenient for the schedule. If a company is in its busy season, there is no time to implement something new. Having a well equipped staff member helps too. When doing something new, it pays to make sure the staff has the right background, credentials, and experience.

If staff are given new duties, owners and managers need to evaluate how cost effective it will be or if current duties will suffer due to the added work load. If the staff can’t handle the added duties or they aren’t properly equipped to do so, it defeats the sole purpose of increasing productivity and profit.

When budgeting time, a good rule of thumb is to double the estimate if there are too many unknowns or if they have never tackled this task before. Missing a deadline isn’t acceptable in any type of business.

Analyze whether the time demanded is the best use of the resources. Take the time allotted to accomplish the task multiplied by the staffs’ hourly rates. Add the cost of lost time and billings, accounting for the lost time of productivity when doing jobs in-house. Then compare the results to the real costs of hiring an outside source.Be sure to add in the fact that quality of training coming from an experienced source will exceed what staff can do in-house since they may lack the experience and expertise that only comes with time and repetition. If doing the job in-house the business owner needs to consider if it will be done as well as an outside expert. Even with outside sources some will need to commit internal staff time when working with outside consultants. Consultants can greatly increase staffs’ knowledge and abilities with the proper understanding.
